Looking for a USAspending API alternative?

The USAspending API is the official record of federal spending and awards. It answers "who won what, and for how much" rather than "what is open to bid on". It is public, needs no key, and covers federal awards only. GovContractScout covers open opportunities across federal, state and local, and adds award history for win likelihood.

USAspending API
  • Public API from the US Treasury, no key required (verified by calling it)
  • Scope is federal awards and spending

Source: official documentation

GovContractScout
  • Open opportunities, not just historical awards: search, detail, NAICS, match scoring
  • Award history powers win likelihood and the winning-archetype model
  • State, county and city coverage that USAspending does not carry
  • Also callable by AI agents through the MCP server

Where USAspending API is strong

  • Authoritative federal award and spending data, maintained by Treasury
  • No key, no signup, generous for research work
  • Excellent for incumbent and price analysis on federal work

Where it leaves a gap

  • Historical awards, not open solicitations: it will not tell you what is open to bid
  • Federal only, so state and local procurement is out of scope
  • Raw award records need interpretation before they answer a bidding question

Questions developers ask

What is the difference between USAspending and an opportunity feed?

USAspending records awards that were already made: who won, how much, from which agency. An opportunity feed shows what is open to bid on now. If you want to find work, you need the opportunity side.

Can I find open solicitations in the USAspending API?

No. It is a spending and award record. For open federal opportunities, use SAM.gov. For open state and local opportunities, you need the individual portals or an aggregator.

Does GovContractScout replace USAspending?

No. We use award data to estimate win likelihood and to show who wins what in a category. GovContractScout covers the opportunity side across federal, state and local, and adds award-derived intelligence on top.

Do I need a key for the USAspending API?

No. It is public and answered a test call with no credentials. Check the official docs for current rate limits.
